UWB-Printed Rectangular-Based Monopole Antenna for Biological Tissue Analysis

This paper presents the design of a printed step-type monopole antenna for biological tissue analysis and medical imaging applications in microwave frequency range. The starts from very simple widely known rectangular antenna, different modifications to geometry are made order increase bandwidth. dimensions optimized by means parametric each dimension using 3-D electromagnetic simulator based on finite element method. with final 40 × 36 mm2, is manufactured onto low-cost FR4 (fiber glass epoxy) substrate. characteristics have been measured inside an anechoic chamber, obtaining omnidirectional radiation pattern working range between 2.7 GHz 11.4 GHz, which covers UWB frequencies enables use applications. Finally, behaviour four these antennas located around realistic breast model, biocompatible materials, has analysed simulator, good results demonstrating usefulness designed proposed application.
